Mr. Schwartz spoke with fifteen St. John’s music students about the program of study at a music conservatory, where students major in a musical instrument, voice, or another specific music program. Such a course of study is different from a typical college or university, and allows the student to prepare for a performing career by concentrating in one performance area.
Application to a music conservatory includes the typical process of sending in transcripts, test scores, and letters of recommendation, but adds a live audition with the conservatory faculty. This is very important to the application process, and allows the faculty to see the talent and passion of the musician.
Junior Jadon Michel said it was a good experience, “I want to continue playing trumpet when I go to college, so I was interested in what I could learn from the session. It was interesting to hear what a college music student does.”
