St. John’s Performing Arts began their Christmas Concert Series this evening with the Jazz Program.
Competition Jazz Ensemble was first to perform and opened with “Stolen Moments.” They continued with “Nutville,” and moved to a Christmas theme with “O Holy Night,” which featured Jacob Patterson on the flugelhorn. The group closed their set with “Crunchy Frog.”
After a quick change of a few student musicians, the Swing Band was ready to perform. The first song in their set was “My Girl.” Their Christmas selection was Vince Guaraldi’s “Christmas is Coming.” The group then played two standards from two eras: "Birdland" from the fusion era, and Count Basie's swing era "One O'Clock Jump," which included some horn choreography. The Swing Band closed the concert with a jazz version of “Gimme Some Lovin’.”
In spite of the dreary weather outside, it was a great concert. Make plans to join us tomorrow for Band and Strings, and Wednesday for the Choral concert.
