On Jan. 27, Gatorade announced Meredith Gotzman ’23 as the DC Girls’ Cross Country Runner of the Year for 2019-20. Gotzman is the first Cadet to be selected for this honor from the girls’ cross country program.
The award recognizes outstanding athletic excellence, high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character both on and off the field. The 5-foot-5 freshman raced to the WCAC individual championship in the fall with a time of 19:02. She also earned victories at the Landon Invitational, the Pacers Running DCXC Invitational and the Varsity B race at the Manhattan Invitational. She took second at the DC Interscholastic Athletic Association championships and finished 22nd at the Nike Cross Nationals Southeast Regional championships.
An altar server at her church, Gotzman has volunteered locally on behalf of youth basketball programs while maintaining a B average in the classroom.
“Meredith has a special talent and cultivates it with hard work and dedication on a daily basis,” said Head Coach Desmond Dunham. “It’s been an amazing experience to witness her maturity and growth as a leader. She ranks among the best student-athletes that I’ve coached over the past 22 years.”
