The February edition of Throw Back Thursday looks at St. John’s Jazz Band, as reported in the February 13, 1986 edition of The Sabre.
Jazz Band Captures Award
“We turned a cold performance situation into something of very warm audience participation,” commented a very excited Steven Kramer.
Under his direction, the Jazz Ensemble was awarded a certificate of excellence for their performance in an adjudication sponsored by the National Association of Jazz Education. The adjudication was held February 6 at Montgomery College in Rockville.
The Jazz Ensemble was one of only three bands, out of possibly 30, to finish the adjudications with straight 1’s, the highest possible mark for a performance.
“It was just a superior performance, the kids were on an unusually high level for a high school band,” said Mr. Kramer. “We received astounding reports from all three judges appraising our style and percussion section. It was really exciting.”
Senior trumpet player Mike Jones said, “The adjudication was a great kick off to get us motivated for future plans.”
The Jazz Ensemble’s next contest will be at the University of Maryland at Baltimore Campus where they will compete against numerous bands from five other states.
