NFHS Honors St. John’s Coaches

This winter, the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) honored three SJC coaches for their work during the 2018-2019 school year: Desmond Dunham, Sal Caccavale and Mark Gibbs.
These coaches were nominated by the District of Columbia State Athletic Association (DCSAA). Selections were based on the individual’s coaching performance during the 2018-2019 school year, as well as their community involvement, school involvement and coaching philosophy.
Desmond Dunham was honored as the National Girls’ Outdoor Track and Field Coach of the Year, placing him among the most elite coaches in the country, as well as the Mideast Section and DC coach of the year for girls’ track and field. In 2019, the SJC girls’ indoor track and field team repeated as DCSAA champions, and the girls’ outdoor track and field team won a second consecutive WCAC championship and the DCSAA title.
Sal Caccavale was selected as the Boys’ Soccer Coach of the Year for the Mideast Section, which includes the District of Columbia, Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia. In the fall of 2018, St. John’s boys’ soccer team won the DCSAA championship, the program’s first title since 1986.
Mark Gibbs was selected as the District of Columbia Baseball Coach of the Year. Last spring, the Cadets won the WCAC regular season title for the eighth consecutive season and the WCAC tournament title for the sixth consecutive season. The team then went on to win the DCSAA championship.
