Girls' Indoor Track and Field Repeats as DC Champions

On Feb. 12, St. John’s girls’ indoor track and field team won their second consecutive DCSAA championship, and Alicia Dawson ’19 and Mordecai McDaniel ’20 each earned MVP honors for their performances at the championship meet.
Overall, the Cadets had a great day at the PG Sports and Learning Complex. The girls’ team was led by Dawson, fresh from a first-place finish in the junior girls’ long jump event at the prestigious Millrose Games on Feb. 9. At the DCSAA meet, Dawson won the long and triple jump events, was runner-up in the high jump and came in third in the 55m hurdles. Alahna Sabbakhan ’19 took first in the 800m, breaking the meet record, came in second in the 500m and the 4x400m relay and placed third in the 300m. The distance dynamic duo of Celia Chorzempa ’21 and Anna Cestari ’19 combined for a total of 23 points to give the ladies the additional boost they needed to win the day.

On the boys’ side, St. John’s finished in third place and were led by McDaniel, who recently represented the US at the Reykjavik International Games in Iceland. At the DCSAA tournament, McDaniel won the 300m in meet record time and also captured gold in the 55m dash. Other top performances came from Austin Rios-Colon ’22, who was third in the 800m, Josh Paige ’20, who finished third in the high jump, and senior Lance DaSilva ’19, who took first place in the shot put.
