On Nov. 9, the SJC varsity volleyball team won its sixth consecutive DCSAA title, continuing their dominance of the DC volleyball scene as the only team to have won the city championship.
In front of a raucous crowd at Trinity University, the Cadets faced the Sidwell Friends Quakers in a rematch of the 2013 DC state championship. SJC emerged victorious, 25-20, 25-23, 25-20. DC state MVP Lauren Antonucci ’19 capped a stellar career with 32 assists, six digs and four kills. Nicole Taylor ’20 seemed to be everywhere, finishing with 10 kills and 18 digs. Anika Eigen-Zucchi ’19 chipped in with 12 kills and eight digs, while Madison Kilpatrick ’21 led the team with five blocks.
As the state tournament has grown over the years, so has the pride the St. John’s volleyball team feels about holding onto the championship.
“I think we’re starting to like the challenge; every year it’s gotten tougher to win it,” Coach Bill Pribac told The Washington Post. “For us to keep competing like this so late in the year says a lot about the girls.”
“As a team, we kept reminding ourselves that this is our title,” Antonucci told The Washington Post. “We won it for six years and we want to keep it.”
